Mute Swan On Lake Nelson
Mike usually spots the early morning visitors, but this time Chris let out the "swan alert." While taking the last photos, Mike noticed that there were also common mergansers.
Mute swans are very rare visitors to Lake Nelson. It's been two years since we last saw one, but that one stayed for two weeks. This one just flew off as we were blogging. It is stunning in flight.

Hi Chris....could you please tell me if Lake Nelson is a private Lake or can anyone come there and walk around ? I went on Google Earth and it looks to me there are no trails to walk. Could you please tell me if that is the case. I see your pictures on NJ Birds all the time. I live around the Princeton area and would like to come up ans see the lake sometime soon.
Thanks, Carol Simmons
Your photos are really very good. Thanks!
Only a small part of Lake Nelson is accessible on a trail that leads from Lakeside Dr N and Nelson Ave. It's only about 200 feet or so and has a short bridge over a creek just below the dam. The rest of the lake is surrounded by homes whose yards are on the lake with no trail around the lake.
I don't mean to discourage, but most of the time the lakes has 95% Canada geese and 4.9% mallards. We get an occasional unusual visitor but they rarely stay long. The swan was here for about 30 minutes and we were lucky to spot him. We have a saying that the worst weather brings the best ducks and we think the visitors are just taking refuge while on spring and fall migration.
