Bathing Beauties: Chickadee, Nuthatch, Titmouse

Chickadee

Nuthatch

Titmouse/

On Saturday we had more than the usual number of birds visiting our backyard water feature.  They are so entertaining, and it really delights us.  However, we promise to leave our backyard when the fall migration picks up, so hopefully we'll have more varied photographs to entertain our blog visitors. We've been meaning to go to Cape May, Brigantine, the Meadowlands, maybe even Dauphin Island, so check back soon to see what we encounter.

Robin and Chickadee keeping cool

Robin and Chickadee
One evening, it was almost 100 degrees when we saw this robin just plopped in the waterfall. A chickadee came by and joined in.

Goldfinch and Chickadee

The Chickade can't stay still and confuses the goldfinches at the feeder.

It's too hot for us to go far. We went to Dairy Queen to get the new (to NJ at least) Blizzard minis. Otherwise, we've just been sitting out, having a glass of wine and waiting for birds to come by. Oh, we also had the peach salsa from Terhune farms which may be better than the nectarine. Mike set up the ladder, put the tripod on top of it, and set up the birdcam to video the baby wrens first flights. Unfortunately, wrens are too small or the motion sensor isn't sensitive enough so the birdcam didn't capture it. There's a good video of Chris looking into the birdcam asking if it's on, but Mike has promised not to post it.

Summer Backyard Birds in New Jersey

One very hot day, we caught this robin taking a bath in our waterfall.

The nuthatches have been very active on the tree trunks but rarely are found on the ground.

We've had quite a few chickadees. They also enjoy the waterfall, but they have also been coming to the tree closest to our deck.

Summer Backyard Birds in New Jersey: Chickadee, Robin, Catbird

Although the spring migration has ended, there still are quite a few birds in our backyard. This year, the antics of the catbirds are particularly amusing. They eat the jelly that we had set out for the orioles and they eat the insects that Chris stirs up while planting. The most amusing part is that they'll dip insects in the jelly and take them back to the nest to feed their babies.

FINALLY! The Gray Cat Bird has a name! I knew I would find that bird's identity on this site if I waited and kept checking in, it was only a matter of time! Now to go read up on it.

Chickadee at the peanut feeder

chickadee

We bought a peanut feeder in hopes of attracting some different birds. This chickadee seems to like it, but we are hopeful that he'll be joined by some migrating spring birds.

We went to Connecticut for Easter but left the birdcam on to see who was at the bird feeder. We had observed the courtship feeding in cardinals, but this is the first time we noticed it in house finches.

The ice and snow has changed the feeding pattern a bit. A chickadee came to the deck to eat and we've seen chickadees, nuthatches, wrens as well as the usual woodpeckers at the suet feeders.

Young Chickadee

Chickadee

Chickadee

On our walk this morning, we were looking for some Northern Flickers which we haven't seen many of lately. Instead we saw lots of small birds darting about a tree, and it turned out to be a family of chickadees. We saw some parents feeding young. We think the Chickadee in the photos is a young one because it wasn't very good at flying.

We are still waiting to get a glimpse of the Oriole babies. We can hear them when the mother comes by to feed but they are 40 feet up and not showing themselves.

Today at the feeder

We noticed quite a bit of bird activity this morning. Juncos arrived, followed by a brown creeper. Then all of our friends came to the feeder. The first four photos were taken through the window. Then, Mike, the geek, set up the tripod and the infrared remote for the camera and captured the red-bellied woodpecker (love his hair) and the rest of the gang.
