Wondering what to have for breakfast?

Kingfisher eating a fish

This kingfisher recommends fresh fish.

Chris always likes a bird photo that is detailed enough to see the eye well. Here, you can see its breakfast's eye too.

Below he shows the proper technique for eating a fish: Toss it in the air, catch it head first, turn your head, swallow, let the tail slide down, and rest.

Blue Heron eating something

Blue Heron
Heron

Chris noticed this large blue heron make a graceful landing on the other side of the lake. A large blue heron was a common visitor last fall before we started blogging and Mike has been wanting to take his picture, even if it's from a distance. He took a few and then was surprised to find out that he caught it eating something rather large. At first we thought it might be a muskrat, which herons have been known to eat, but now we think it may be a large fish. Whatever it is, it looks too big for it.

Hawk Getting Ready to Fly

This hawk hung around for a while in a tree looking for something to eat. He scared a finch away from the feeder and landed on a post on the dock. Here is a picture of him as he was flying away still hungry.

There was a squirrel in the tree who didn't move for a few minutes. Here, the hawk seemed to consider a squirrel dinner.

One Less Finch for the Great Backyard Bird Count

While counting birds for the Great Backyard Bird Count, a sharpshined hawk came by and caught a finch in mid-air. He flew to a nearby tree with his prey.
