We were in New York this weekend and did some birding in Central Park Monday AM. It was good exercise after all the eating we did.
We added the Warbling Vireo to our life lists and saw our first ovenbird of the year.

Here are some photos of an early spring migrating bird, the black and white warbler. We visited Prospect Park in Brooklyn because the weather was supposed to be nice and there had been sightings of a prothonotary warbler. No such luck for us, but we did have some great pizza, red velvet cake and ice cream after birding in Brooklyn.

Spring Warblers and More at Garret Mountain

Garret Mountain in West Patterson is a good place to see many migrating warblers in the Spring. We went on Saturday and saw several of these darling birds.

This bird stayed fairly high in the trees and was difficult to photograph. He wasn't nearly as cooperative as the palm warbler.

Chris was glad to see her first oriole of the year. We've been hearing some at home but they have not come to the jelly, oranges, or nectar we have left out. We finally did see one in our neighborhood last evening but not in our yard yet.

Based on the reddish color of the back, white eye ring, and the amount of streaking on the SIDE of the face, I'd say your unIDed bird is a Wood Thrush.

Black and White Warbler having a bath

Black and White Warbler

Here is our little friend, the black and white warbler, back to visit us after a year away. We have a water dripper going into a bath for the birds who don't come to the feeders, but this warbler took advantage of the puddle that forms on the ground under it instead of using the dish. It then went up into the tree to dry off and get some privacy from our prying eyes. We were very glad to have this visitor as things have been slow in the yard this late summer. As much as we hate the thought of winter, we are looking forward to fall migration and spotting some other less common friends.

An infrequent but oh so delightful visitor is the black and white warbler. Maybe they are here more often, though, and we just don't see them because they dart around very quickly. They don't come to any of the feeders but appear to be getting insects from all the nooks and crannies in the trees.

I saw these yesterday in my backyard for the first time. I was curious about what they were and found your site. Thanks for the info. I am in Towaco.

I rescued one today, stuck in Newport PATH station, a largeclump of hair and dust stuck on it's leg. Caught it iin a shirt, removed the debris, set it outside. It took off in a northwesterly direction!

Black and White Warbler

Black and White Warbler

A new visitor today. It's not our greatest picture (see the barn swallow for that!) but we couldn't resist posting because we haven't seen one of these yet. He has zebra stripes, and he runs down the tree head first like a nuthatch and darts about like a chickadee.
