Baby Turkeys: Was it Worth It?

Baby Turkeys

Mike and Chris go for a walk around the block almost every morning. Yesterday, when walking past the park, there were several adult turkeys with some baby turkeys barely visible in the distance. Mike coerced Chris into changing their walk, going back home for the camera and binoculars, but by the time they returned, the turkeys were gone.

So this morning about 6:15, Mike nudged Chris in bed to get up early and see if the turkeys had returned. Chris reluctantly agreed, but when they reached the park, there was a lady walking a dog and no turkeys. After one lap around the block, Mike and Chris returned to the park and the dog was gone but still no turkeys. It was about the same time they saw the turkeys the previous day, so Mike suggested waiting, hiding in the penalty box of the skating rink in case the turkeys returned. About 5 minutes later, the turkeys appeared and Mike got some photos and Chris got some good views in the binoculars.

We went for a walk this morning and when we got to a clearing, Chris paused to soak up some sun, a rarity of late. We walked a little further and came across a like-minded turkey. Later in the day, we got a nice picture of a cardinal at the platform feeder, saw a tufted titmouse also eating a seed taken from the platform feeder, and saw our robin fledglings demanding to be fed from their parents.

Are these wild? Wild turkeys come through our yard a few times a year but any noise sets them running. We would never get so close.

Yes, they are wild. We had one at our house once but it flew away, across the lake as soon as we opened the door. A neighbor on the other side of the lake feeds the wild turkeys and we took these photos on a morning walk. There are 10 or 15 in the area that don't seem so skittish.

You should keep these away from Sarah Palin.

Wild Turkeys

Turkey

We went for a walk this morning. We brought the camera along in case we found where the Wood Ducks had flown to. We saw a group of Wild Turkeys in the side yard of a house and started taking a few pictures. The owner spotted us and invited us into the backyard for a better look. They were a nice couple who seemed to appreciate wildlife as much we do.
